5 things I’ve learnt about surfing while being pregnant ♡
It’s less about wave count, and more about the joy of being in the ocean. Go at your own pace, and don’t feel disappointed if you don’t catch anything!
How I started surfing
“I did not start surfing until late October 2022 when my partner gifted me a pink soft top for my birthday. I remember him pushing me onto small green waves at Bunker Bay and I was surfing on my belly, laughing like a 7-year-old girl in a lolly shop!”
A beautiful collaboration, just in time for Christmas!
Post-surf, taking pleasure in a warm and nurturing cup of tea can be a natural extension of the joy we experience in the water. It's a beautiful way to prolong the enjoyment of the session, while taking care of yourself at the same time. A ritual we can’t help but continue to indulge in!
The art of becoming one with your surfboard
It takes patience to become familiar with the nuances of a new surfboard - the adjustment period is frustrating, but almost always necessary! Pack yourself a picnic and stay a little longer…
The winter ocean offers an invigorating surfing experience, with fewer crowds and a different kind of energy. Despite the chilly temperatures, passionate surfers eagerly venture into the ocean, embracing the elements and riding the larger, more powerful swells. But as the warmer months approach, the beach takes on an entirely different purpose - almost that of a second home. Leisure, slowness, and relaxation washes over you. Colourful umbrellas, laughter, and delicious food create a vibrant new backdrop.

On being a vulnerable adult learner
As a teenager, I spent hours on the beach as a “wave widow” to boyfriends and male friends. While I had dabbled, it wasn’t until my mid-20s that I felt driven to get out there myself. There was nothing like the thrill of my first green water wave to light the fires of ambition to proceed further. The frustrations of being a vulnerable adult learner (VAL) provided a further push to get to the next level. And eventually, I found myself improving quickly.
