Surf snacks : ultimate toasted sammies
Now this is a toasted sammie we can get behind! The simplicity of an incredible toasted sandwich, with its crisp, golden edges and oozy cheese filling, makes it the most satisfying meal after a wonderful session in the surf. A perfectly executed toasted sandwich does rely on several factors - today, we share some next-level combinations for you to try, along with our top tips on elevating your toasted sambo to perfection.
COMBINATION IDEAS:
Wilted spinach, feta, and cottage cheese
Gruyere, ham, and spring onions
Lightly cooked leek, cheddar, and dijon mustard
Roasted eggplant, mozzarella, and basil
Proscuitto, gouda, and fresh fig Marmite, cheese, and tomato Salami, pickle, and cheddar
HOW TO COOK?
We love a classic plug-in-the-wall toastie machine. You know the kind that creates triangle-shaped pockets of melty goodness (we’re talking old-school here, not a panini press!). However, if you don’t have one of these, a cast-iron skillet or regular frypan does a good job. Just be sure to stand by and watch, don’t be a wally and burn one side like we always do!
FURTHER TIPS:
Sprinkle your sandwich with flaky sea salt before grilling.
Add a smothering of mayonnaise or aioli to make the filling extra oozy.
Sprinkle some herbaceous herbs, such as thyme, sage, or rosemary, on top of the bread before toasting.
Want a pop of freshness? scatter over chives or Italian parsley to garnish (plus, you’ll look like a food styling pro).
Sprinkle some parmesan on the outside of your bread before grilling. This makes the exterior extra golden and crispy.
